Diwali Celebration in America (अमेरिका में दिवाली समारोह)

Diwali is a religious and cultural holiday, celebrated by both the devout and the secular in the United States. Celebrated as the festival of lights, Diwali is celebrated across the world by various religions and cultures, especially in South Asia. This year Diwali will be on Monday 24 October. Festivals and celebrations usually last for several days.
Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists celebrate Diwali in different ways, enriching cultural traditions and customs. For Hindus, on the day of the festival Bhagwan Shri Ram and his wife Mata Sita return to their kingdom after 14 years of exile.

This festival is also important for other religions. Sikhs refer to this as "Bandi Chhor Divas". Jains recognize it as the day when Bhagwan Mahavir, their last spiritual leader, attained physical death and attained enlightenment. Some Buddhists observe the emperor respecting Ashoka's embrace of Buddhism.

How do people celebrate Diwali in the United States?
The Hindu American Foundation states that Hindus in the United States celebrate with colorful patterns of flowers, rice or sand on the floor, an artistic practice called Rangoli to bring good luck. Like food, fashion and faith, Indians take their favorite festivals with them wherever their livelihood takes them.

It is no different in the US where people of Indian origin have been living since the 1820s. Over the years, a growing Indian immigrant population has been celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, from their homeland following the festival with great fanfare.

Hindu temples in America observe the festival with great pomp during Diwali, with most Indians worshiping Devi Lakshmi and Prabhu Ganesh. Diwali in America is one such festival that has become an intrinsic part of American culture like any other American festival.
