Satyananda Saraswati was a monk, yoga teacher and guru in both India and the West. He wrote more than 80 books, including the popular 1969 booklet Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha.

Sri Shivananda Saraswati, the guru of Swami Satyananda Saraswati who initiated him into the Dashanami sect of sannyasa on 12 September 1947 on the banks of the Ganges and gave him the name Swami Satyananda Saraswati.

Sri Swamiji used to say that listening, speaking or seeing Sri Swami Shivanand Saraswati is yoga. From 1963 to 1982, Sri Swamiji brought yoga to every corner of the world, to people of every caste, creed, religion and nationality. He inspired millions of seekers in different countries. Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati set out as a wandering monk and traveled extensively throughout India, Afghanistan, Burma, Nepal, Tibet, Ceylon and the entire Asian subcontinent on foot, car, train and sometimes even by camel and elephant. During his travels, he met people from all sections of society and began formulating his ideas on how to propagate the science of yoga.
