Mirra Alfassa (1878-1973), also known as The Mother, was a French writer, painter, and spiritual teacher. She was born in Paris to a Jewish family and studied art and music.
In 1910, she met Sri Aurobindo, an Indian philosopher and yogi, and became his disciple. She moved to India with him in 1920 and helped him establish the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry.
The Mother was a powerful spiritual force and is considered to be one of the most important figures in the development of Integral Yoga. She wrote extensively on spiritual topics and her teachings have influenced many people around the world.
Many politicians visited Alfassa on a regular basis. She had visits from V. V. Giri, Nandini Satpathy, the Dalai Lama, and especially Indira Gandhi, who was in close contact with her. The Mother died in 1973 at the age of 94. She is buried in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry.
